Zindagi Gulzar Hai Style

Given the innumerable mediocre serials airing these days, all revolving around the same ghisa pitta 4-5 plots, it is is evident that our TV channels/producers have run out ideas and don’t quite know where to go from here on.

So, hey, how about this suggestion: Take the concept of dubbing Turkish serials, turn it around on its head… and voila! we end up with a Hollywood film starring our very own Zaroon and Kashaf! Don’t think I’m making any sense?

Well, check out this fabulous fan made video that I stumbled across on YouTube today … itna mazedar ke aap sab ke saath share karna tau banta tha!!

Aunn Zara Episode 11 Review

Finally!! Aap sab ko bohot bohot mubarak ho…. aakhir-e kaar Pakistan ki sab se bari tension khatam ho hi gayi! Thank you Faiza and Haissam for putting us out of our misery, both Aunn and I will remain eternally grateful – for very different reasons of course! No, but seriously, I don’t think I could have sat through one more episode of Aunn and Zara not being able to move on with their lives.

But now that they have, I am back to feeling the groove and thoroughly enjoying the new direction this story has taken. With her beautifully knit script, where every scene is there for a reason, Faiza has outdone herself here.

Barely had the dust settled on Aunn and Zara’s ma’mala, ke the busybodies of Aunn’s family found themselves a whole new funda to get worked up over – honestly in khawateen ko bhi na koi chain nahin hai, har dafa koi na koi baat pakar kar hyper ho jati hain. Misinterpreting the silly games that all newly-weds are wont to indulge in, first Husna, then daadi and finally phupo, all are now convinced that Aunn has turned into a monster, read following in his father’s footsteps, and mistreating Zara.

While the three ladies fretted on about how and where they went wrong with raising Aunn, hamarey hero sahab remained blissfully oblivious to all this tension and was seen happily crowing about his success in lording it out over his family.

Beta, Aunn, kaha tha na Pir Manzar ki baaton pey mat lagnaa, abhi tau tum ne sirf trailer dekha hai … wait till the full on implications of daadi and ammi’s naraazgis hit you! Aunn’s shocked reactions were absolutely priceless when, perhaps for the first time ever, the women in his family refused to cater to his every whim – loved it when daadi lost her temper with Aunn and the dining room scene later was nicely done as well.

Alongside the main track, we also saw more of an elaboration on the attraction between Nighat and Jamshed. Reluctantly, almost despite themselves, these two opposites are slowly building a base for a future relationship. Sabreen Hisbani and Adnan Jaffer have sizzling chemistry and their scenes together are great fun. Today we also got another tantalizing glimpse into Husna’s painful past.

I am really enjoying how creatively Faiza and Haissam are unfolding Husna’s story, no easy resorts to flashbacks, dream sequences, or long dialogues from them. What we get here instead is an indirect story being told through the way Husna reacts to Aunn’s behavior with Zara, and how determined she is to not have Zara suffer the same fate as her. Husna’s has to be my favorite track in the whole story, I just wish it could move faster though….

Hina Bayat is magical as Husna. Running a close second to Husna, is my other favorite, Parveen Bano. How fabulous is Nasreen Qureshi! Her portrayal of daadi reminds me so much of my own equally crusty grandmother, never afraid to call a spade a spade and no hesitation whatsoever in defending the perceived underdog. Daadi’s invitation to Zara, to confide in her, and her immediate displeasure at and censure of Aunn’s nalaiq harkats were beautifully done.

All in all this was a very happening installment. Haissam and Faiza deserve a round of applause for their very delicate handling of THE moment. Though I felt it went on for a trifle too long, I appreciated that there were no tacky dialogues or cheap innuendos. Also, a special mention of Haissam’s aesthetic handling of intimate moments.

The scene where Aunn and Zara were pulling each other’s hair, had the potential of becoming awkward, but it came off as such a natural, playful moment – beautifully executed by Haissam, Osman and Maya. From Aunn’s moment of triumph to his uncomprehending exasperation over his family’s change in manner, this was Osman’s episode to shine, and shine he did. Barring those never-ending gazes that have yet to work their magic on me, Osman was stellar here.

Maya is the perfect Zara to Osman’s Aunn, and is generally doing a good job. It was good to see Mukarram back for a couple of minutes. Needless to say even in those few minutes, Pir Manzar was a riot. Seems like he has definitely set his sights on Shehna – may the Lord help her! From the likely union of Manzar and Shehna, to a strong possibility of a linkup between Nighat-Jamshed, to all the confusions and misunderstandings that have started making their presence felt in Aunn’s household, seems like there’s quite a bit yet to happen. Picture abhi baaqi hai mere dost … looking forward!

Kadoorat ~ Episode 1 Review

The first episode of Kadurat/Kadoorat, the latest offering from MD’s Productions went on air today. I had been looking forward to this one for almost a year, since the first set of “behind the scenes” pics first started floating around on various media related FB pages.

That Kadoorat had intriguing promos (great job by the editor) and featured Sanam Saeed in the lead role ensured that I, along with many others I’m sure, made it a point to watch this opening chapter. The first installment set up the basic premise, wherein we were introduced to Mahmud, a recent widower, his wife Zainab had passed away in a car crash, and his preteen daughter Mina.

Concerned about his daughter’s well-being, Mahmud enters into a zarooriyat ki khatir marriage of convenience with Atiqa, divorcĂ©e with two children, Asad and Alina. Kadoorat opens with Mahmud introducing Mina to Atiqa, Alina and Asad. This episode cataloged Mina’s increasingly rude/angry/violent responses to her new siblings and step-mom. While this bare bones outline might sound like this was an interesting opener,

I was left unimpressed. Even if I overlook the fact that it bore a striking resemblance to Zard Mausam, another Aabis Raza/MD Productions project with the same child star in a somewhat similar character, the fact that the online synopsis left nothing to the viewers’ imagination rendered this first episode pointless. As for the story itself, to begin with, I have yet to come across such an awkward and insensitive way of introducing a grieving preteen to a new set of step-family members.

Given that we are provided no sense of how much time had lapsed between Zainab’s death and Mahmud’s re-marriage, it was difficult not to empathize with Mina’s immediate response. Why the rush? Why the insistence on having Mina accept her zabardasti ki family? Forget about Mina, even I would have rebelled! Later, when her childish belligerence takes on a sinister, almost psychotic turn, Mina’s transformation, from a sweet, loving child to this very disturbed girl with a dark personality, is extremely abrupt and left unexplained.

I wish we had seen some more of Mahmud and his daughter’s life together, before this abrupt entry of a new ready-made family. Mahmud’s new wife Atiqa is depicted as an educated, working woman. Her ex-husband was an aggressive, insecure man who divorced her on the flimsiest of excuses.

Beyond this basic fact, we know nothing of Atiqa’s background or why and how she met Mahmud. The fact that she didn’t even know how Zainab had died till much later was perhaps indicative of how rushed this arrangement had been, and if this was indeed the case, then we should have been provided a reason for this rushed marriage. Even after the marriage, we are given no sense of passage of time even in this episode.

From Atiqa and Mahmud’s conversation it seemed that they had been married for a while, a few months at least, since Mahmud expresses his frustration at his daughter ongoing behavioral issues. In this scenario, where Mahmud and Atiqa are shown as very mature, sensible adults, both genuinely concerned with the welfare of all three children,

why doesn’t either one think of a child psychologist for Mina? What we get instead is that the same father who was initially concerned enough to remarry for his daughter’s sake is now seriously contemplating sending Mina away to boarding school. Arrey bhai sahab, agar yehi karna that tau shaadi karne ki kiya zaroorat thi .. pehle hi bhej dete! Apart from the glaring loopholes in the story, and the loud background music, what I did enjoy was the interaction between the three children; director Aabis Raza does a commendable with the kids’ performances.

I also liked the way the flashbacks were shown in a sepia tone, making them stand apart from the narrative in the present. Angeline Malik looked and acted the part of a concerned mother, whereas her partner, Deepak Perwani, did not. So yes, I was disappointed with the first episode, but will hang in there for at least a couple more weeks to see if the story perks up a bit, particularly after Sanam’s entry. Did any of you watch this one? Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

Silvatein ~ Episodes 18-22 Review

Finally caught up with the last five episodes of Silvatein and all I can say is WOW!!! What the heck happened to the story I fell in love with way back when? What was once a beautifully nuanced story has now turned into the much hackneyed two-sister formula. Even though Natasha has some occasional fleeting shades of grey, the now annoying refrain of Zaib juice pee lo and ghar Bilal ke naam kar do makes her look so dark that black looks white. On the other hand, Zaib with her placid smile and her beyond believable tendency to protect her younger sister makes me want to strangle her. What’s up with these two sisters? Seems like one is ready to be dispatched to the hottest corners of Hell and the other is a saint waiting for the Pope to canonize her… aargh!! Can we please move on? At this point Silvatein is spinning around so much its making me dizzy.

If ever there was a stalled story in need of some serious dhaka, Silvatein is it! When I had left off at episode 17, both sisters and their spouses had returned to Pakistan and the boys’ mother had just passed away, with more than a little help from both, Natasha and Zaib. Yes, I’m not blaming Natasha alone. Zaib too is an adult and should have gathered by now that her sister was not a two year old who needed to be told where to go and whom to talk to when… last time I checked Zaib was her older sister not Natasha’s keeper.

But ever since Zaib turned a corner in her life, she’s made it her life’s mission to micro manage Natasha’s life as well. Much as I abhor Natasha, I have to say the last 5-6 episodes have cemented my dislike of Zaib as well. She is not only ms. goody-two shoes, but also annoyingly patronizing. Rayaan has it right, Zaib should quit meddling in her younger sister’s life and try to focus on what’s important in her own life… namely him. At his point I fail to see what attracts Rayaan to Zaib.. what does he see in this now boring woman? Zaib is unnaturally demure and sickeningly sweet with him – yes, Rayaan is right in questioning whether Zaib is happy in her marriage, not once has he seen her open up and laugh as freely as she does with Mikaal and her coworkers.

I have yet to see them talk about something other than Natasha and Bilal. Zaib, my friend, if you cannot be bothered to be interested in your very hot hubby, then please buy a pet, or go find a hobby… at least then you’ll have something else to discuss with your husband. If not, then I’m sure there are tons of other women willing to take him off your hands, leaving you free to think about Natasha 24/7. From Zaib to Natasha, man!! these two sisters redefine the word obsessed.

The older one cannot see beyond her younger sister, and the younger sister has a blinkers-on approach to ruining her sister’s life. Yes, I get it that she has issues with her sibling and Zaib is no farishta either, but still!!! Girlfriend, you have a husband, lame duck as he might be, you have a daughter, and are expecting a second child…how in the world do you find time to go on all these jaunts to all these deras? For me the whole peerni and taveez track just does not work; it is almost as bad as the Lyari track in the beginning.

There are times, like when Natasha thought Zaib was having a heart attack, when there is some fleeting concern, but other than those ephemeral moments, so far this child (I’m sorry I cannot call her a woman because she does not behave any different than a 5 year old stomping her foot) has not shown any growth in how the many ever years that have passed since the serial began.

Married to Nasty Natasha is the Clueless Chotu – kiya aadmi hai yeh bhi?! Chotu had my sympathies in the beginning, but now I’m washing my hands off him as well … no matter how cute and adorable he might be, Chotu sahab if you refuse to man up and stand for yourself then you deserve to be treated like dirt by your beloved wife. Forget about your wife, if you continue this way, even your daughter will walk all over you the minute she learns to mouth off.

Come on yaar, how can you actually believe all the nonsense Natasha feeds you about the taveez? Seriously Chotu, did you fall and hit your head hard when you were a child?? Actually, you know what, on second thought, you and Natasha deserve each other – both are like children, refusing to grow up. Speaking of children, uff! Farhan and Dardana need a huge round of applause for ably demonstrating why their daughters are the losers that they are.

The way they turned on Zaib the minute Natasha said something to them, or how they pointed guns at Rayaan when they heard about Zaib’s hospitalization, speaks volumes about how bad parenting can seriously impact children’s lives, the impact of which can be felt long after they’ve left home.

And, finally Rayaan, the only voice of sanity in this insane family drama.. my only question to him: Why? Why are you still wasting your time with these idiotic sisters? By now you should know that your sister-in-law is insanity personified, and your saintly wife is like a kutte ki dum, no matter how much you try to straighten it, it will curl up again and again. Why don’t you cut your losses and move on .. go back to the US please, don’t forget you still have a child who deserves a sane father! Despite my problems with the characters and the pace of the story,

I continue to follow Silvatein because of the fabulous acting. Shehrazade might have lost her grip on the narrative, but she has managed to extract good performances from her actors. I love watching Adeel and Aamina together, I just wish they had livelier characters to work with. Mira Sethi is very good as Natasha, again with her too,

I wish her role had allowed her more margin than just play the evil annoying sister. Daniyal is another one who is really good and believable as Chotu, just wish his character would have been a bit more believable, and shown some growth. Maheen Rizvi is also good as Muneeze. Annoyed and disappointed as I am with Silvatein, even as I am writing this very quick synopsis, on one level Samira’s story continues to make sense. It’s just that all vitality has been sapped out of it by the way it has been needlessly stretched and turned into a drag fest, making the shortcomings stand out all the more starkly. And, its not the just that, as I was catching up with the last few episodes back to back, I realized how bland Silvatein looked visually as well.

Most of the narrative takes place indoors, in three/four rooms, and so the settings get monotonous very quickly. That most of the action, inaction actually, takes place with the characters seated, either on beds, couches or around the kitchen table, gives the feeling that the story is literally at a standstill. How I wish that Shehrazade and her DOP had shown some creativity in framing the scenes and added some movement, and that Six Sigma had loosened their purse strings a bit more and added some outdoor locations, moving the narrative beyond the confines of the four walls, bringing in a much needed breath of fresh air to a now claustrophobic story. At this point, given its lethargic pace, I’m not sure how many more episodes are left for the story to come to a satisfying end, but here’s to hoping that it happens sooner rather than later!

Numm Episode 1 review Two Perspectives

Let me say first of all I had decided against reviewing this serial because the promos looked slow , annoying and a little too intimate for my taste. However being a Fawad Khan fan,as the moment of truth approached all pretense at rationality finally crumbled and here I am . Fair warning though , if it get's really bad then even I might have the strength to drop it .As a first episode this was quite intriguing. From the promos I had been expecting long scenes and actors contemplating their fate, fanned only by the breeze created by their lonely sighs.
Happily, the story moved along at a good pace and the basic pillars of the plot were smoothly established without reams of dialogue. Perhaps it’s me but I have a feeling someone has done a good job of editing this, because the look of the promos was very different, much slower. The story revolves around Fawad Khan and two women; you could have knocked me over with a feather …Quelle surprise…

what innovation! I wonder why NO one ever thought of that before. I guess it just takes a special kind of genius. Wali Bakht arrives in, what is by now Fawad Khan’s requisite fancy car, along with a friend presumably from his college in Oxford. Being the Zamindar type he ignores his guest and takes a nap. From Wali’s interaction with the super competent Mahjabeen we can tell not one of them is happy with the zabardasti ka rishta between them.

Wali actually seems embarrassed that his friend sees Mahjabeen and to her credit she isn't exactly bothered by her young husband’s approval or disapproval. I say to her credit because the promos keep showing her in classic doormat formation being ill-treated by his silly younger wife and making simply sickening glances of entreaty at Wali, instead of smacking said younger wife around the head and walking off. Then we are introduced to Wali’s new, very reluctant bride to be. At this point I would like to heave a long drawn out sigh and ask myself the question: why do all of Fawad Khan’s heroines have so many nakhras…

will there ever be a play where the bride is actually happy about marrying him? Is this some kind of Freudian revenge the industry is taking out on him because of his unquestionable popularity …? Moving on: I was ready to hate this Neelam character on sight because again from the promos she was acting like a witch and could barely pronounce her dialogues. However at this point she seems to be the only sensible one. I know that is going to change because in this writer’s Universe the more educated you are the worse a person you become.

Wali’s mother is educated: hopeless case locked in a room, Wali is educated: resigned to marry any number of women he has no interest in and damaged by his father’s death, Neelam’s Mother is your typical evil, hypocritical NGO lady beloved of Pakistani dramas: willing to surrender her daughter to a complete stranger, Neelam is convent educated but a witch of the first water and talks to trees etc... But the soft spoken Mahjabeen who has ostensibly been dealt the worst hand in life and cannot remember how to read English anymore, is quite normal. Neelam’s character is established as childish, rude and possessive.

I am not sure who she was talking to by the tree when her mother comes to collect her but it seems as if she lives in her own fantasy world. Neelam is braver than Wali and actually tries to get out of this situation; her speech about feudals was actually quite good ,now if she would just enunciate the words more clearly. So far Kanza’s acting leaves a little to be desired but she seems to have put a lot of energy into her acting, perhaps it will improve. It must be hard for any newcomer with proven actors like Sanya Saeed, Fawad Khan etc.. in front of them. I can only suppose the insular, claustrophobic feeling I am getting from the lighting and the camera angles is deliberate but there must be better ways of doing it. Since watching the promos for this serial I felt it might be similar to ASHK , well it’s not.

The beginning 7-8 episodes of Ashk were actually quite reasonable and beautifully shot compared to this. Things just got crazy in Ashk when the story moved to Turkey. I am resigned to the fact that this serial is going to be full of regressive themes and utterly degrading to women. The fatalism and inertia of the characters in this episode and all the promos seem to guarantee it. Having said that it is nicely put together by director Ahasan Talish, and holds the viewer’s interest but as is becoming a familiar refrain, its biggest attraction is Fawad Khan. As usual he is the best thing about the serial From the moment we see him he owns the character of Wali Bakht. Without him it would be eminently missable. Sanya Saeed is of course subtly perfect , her acting skills are undeniable. Usman Peerzada is good as Sekander Baksh or" Barrey saheb" , who forces his decisions on the others because as he says he provides the money , for the good life, the cars etc.. Farah Shah as Umptal ,

Wali's sad and disturbed mother was also good, it was quite a surprise to hear her character speak such good English despite the Jahalat that has apparently trapped her family. In the beginning she is shown begging her husband played I think by Ahsan Talish( ?), not to take revenge on the people who have murdered his brother. I am assuming that Wali's forced marriage to Mahjabeen is probably a result of those actions. Is it just me or shouldn't we as a people be moving forward from this almost inevitable, fatalistic attitude towards various cruel and jahil practices in our culture?I am going to remain hopeful for this serial and give it a B ( however without Fawad it would be a C because it all looks so old fashioned). After all it has some great actors in it and as a first episode it was engaging. There must be a reason why one of the; if not the highest paid actor in our industry chose to do this instead of the no doubt myriad offers coming his way.

So far I cannot see the reason . I really wish Fawad would move on from this two women fighting over him scenario ,surely there are better stories out there ? Written By Sadaf Maria's thoughts: Excellent review Sadaf. Thanks for putting it all my thoughts very nicely! I think most of the matter about stereotypical flogging of horse *cough NGO lady cough* almost made me roll my eyes but then layout of excellent script coupled with mysterious characters and some well directed scenes, and F-factor makes Numm something a little more intriguing:

Let me starting by putting some of my favorite dialogues from the episode today: -Jahalat ka kala rang, apni tarhan aurat kay har rang ko tareek bana deta hai... -Tum bhi is maqbra hoo..aik kahani ka maqbra ho.. -Baghti Rahay Gi, Baghti Rahay Gi…akhir kahin to rukna parhay ga na! I have two things to add. To be quiet honest I never found anything great in Fawad Khan’s acting.

He just played himself…He played Fawad Khan! On the other hand, I thought Kinza (Neelum’s) acting was spot on! You could literally feel her heart beating in her eyes at the absurdity of this entire situation. She might seem over the top but she knows her destiny or her fate is not in her hands. Her move to demand speaking to Wali without seeing the repercussions of her act and trying to control a little bit of situation shows that she is trying to make sense of it all. Unlike Mahjabeen who has accepted the stillness and loneliness of the hawlili around her, Neelum is a total storm.

Wali on the other hand can pretend to could shoulder Mahjabeen all he wants but he treats her more like a teenage son could shoulder treating their mother who has just scolded him. There is definitely more to their relationship then the two minutes we have seen together. Numm might seem a story of extremity but I see it more as a metaphor for smaller things in society. All characters are bound by laws and morals, they never choose or can control. It is a constant battle of love and hate. Neelum can’t stop loving her grandmother yet she is the one who is bounding her to a fate she would rather not have. Numm might not be everyone’s cup of tea but its raw emotions at least have encompassed me for now. Looking forward from the team and more.

For anyone vaguely interested in rolling along with Pakistani cinema’s new-blood revival would have given a smidgen of consideration to Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (MHSA), the ‘first’ Pakistani sports-flick dunked deep in family drama starring Humayun Saeed, Noman Habib, Javed Sheikh, Nadeem Baig, Ismail Tara, Shafqat Cheema – and about a gazillion cameos from anyone abstractedly linked to the industry.

Bearing in mind the bash of a premiere yesterday, think of the cameos as family-support for Mr. Saeedand Shahzad Nasib’s sure fire blockbuster; And, in case anyone forgets about either their or ARY Films’ – who distributes the movie along with Mandviwalla Entertainment – place in the industry, this is one extended family. The love part from the industry is infectious, but it never seeps into the feature film; at least not directly.

Mr. Saeed plays Akbar Deen, a pro-cricketer who’s the pride-and-joy of his familythat includes a mom, a pop (Mr. Baig), a wife (Mahnoor Baloch) and son. Akbar gets implicated with illegal drugs after he gets drunk by an orange juice drink and a (quite revealing) dance item by Mathira (the song is Masti Main Doobi by Neeti Wagh and Shani). It is – quite literally – a flash, which dumps Akbar in a jail cell and bats his career out of the cricket grounds.

Years later, Shahid (Noman Habib), an on-the-breadline prodigy youngster from Sialkot who works the cash register in a local restaurant, pushes the owner of his local cricket club (Ismail Tara, playing Malick Khalid) to try the team for a Pepsi-sponsored tournament. A few beats later, and rather vapidly, Akbar signs up as the team’s coach. Their rivals, silver spoons who reach the cricketing grounds by choppers, are employed by Mian Asif Qureishi (Mr. Sheikh senior), and includes Mikaal Qureishi (Shahzad Sheikh), Akbar’s son. For those of us who are still biased to put MHSA along Chak De India, I have one thing to say: please don’t.

Mr. Saeed’s film written by Vasay Chaudhary, working from a scarred-underdog/least bet-team that wins the cup formula, devises enough deviations in its revved up pace to make the distinctions obvious. A few unresolved angles (the husband-wife split-up; the rich father-in-law vs. the cricketer son-in-law) do dig ruts within MHSA’s narrative. Nevertheless these are just minor botches that are easily swept under the rug by the speed of MHSA’s execution. As performances go, I have a sincere advice for Mr. Saeed: stop acting for the small-screen. Mr. Saeed, who mostly equips his acting arsenal with scowls and growls and a tear drop or two,

kicks in some class nuances in unexpected nooks and crannies. And with 70% (maybe more) screen-time to his Akbar, Mr. Saeed becomes a central point of weight for MSHA. Noman Habib, as the engaging rural Shahid Afridi, piles on the innocence, but more often than not his naivetĂ© and unsophistication (acting wise) becomes rather apparent.Ms. Baloch is plastic, and like the most expensive kind is (unblinkingly) fixed in place. Ainy Jaffri, the big city girl with big,big eyes, who falls for Shahid is flimsy, because of the way she’s placed in the film – rather like Asym Mehmood, Ainan Arif and Gohar Rasheed, who are fairly good to average depending on the scale and clichĂ© of their exposure.

Mr. Arif plays Michael Magnet, a Christian who makes way for some minor obligatory racial biasness.Like every conflict, the resolution is nippy if not shrewd (case in point: the estranged father-son dilemma between Mr. Baig and Mr. Saeed, which piles up, only to open a separate narrative track). Sometimes – for example, the climax and the cricket matches – the hastiness works against the anticipation. Still, for a bulk of its entirety, MHSA swaps between characters one ends up rooting for: the roll-call includes Majeed Maulvi, the slightly racist, short-tempered Pathan played by Humza Ali Abbasi, Mr. Sheikh’s stereotypical villain Asif Qureishi and Mr. Cheema’s brilliantly played Bashir Bhatti, a worthless, gambling self-indulgent father to Shahid. The only other actor who stands up to Mr. Cheema’s vivid charisma and dexterity is Mr. Tara, whose presence even dominates Mr. Saeed in some scenes.

Drama Aunn Zara Episode 7

This is probably the first time with Aunn Zara where I walked away without a satisfied, wah kya episode tha feeling. Though there were plenty of lovely moments sprinkled throughout – loved daadi ji’s reminisces about daada ji marhoom’s tariqas to manao her, smiled at Manzar’s unfazed chichorapan as he line-maaroed Shehna, and felt apna bechara Aunn’s frustration as he ran from pillar to post trying to find ways to jump-start his badly stalled pyar ki kahani – nonetheless the been-there-done-that-feeling lingered throughout. The slow pace, the fact that nothing “new” happened today and the by now all too familiar random ending, all came together to make this the one that fell just short of the finish line. Continuing from where he left off last week, now that he’s made up his mind that he is interested in Zara, Aunn continued to bumble his way through to make his place in his wife’s heart. Again following pir saeen Manzar’s advice Aunn decided to take Zara out for a movie date. Sadly though, much like the frustrating khandaani dinner last week, this time around too ulti aanten galey par gayeen as the evening ended disastrously with Zara getting her forehead stitched. Bechari Zara! The one good thing that came out of this fiasco was Zara’s unexpected defense of Aunn….seems like fauji sahab’s tomboyish daughter is just about ready to lose her heart to the khandan ka eklauta chashm o chiragh, Aunn. Of course, before any of the dil lena aur dil dena business can even begin, there are many a slips between the cup and lip. First daadi ji unknowingly plays the villain in this yet-to-start love story, and then Aunn messes up the plot even further when he places flowers next to a very allergic Zara’s nose. Given the whole lack of privacy bit, it is by default then that all the romantic encounters between our newly-wed couple take place in the bedroom, and here much as Haissam might try otherwise, unfortunately now, after five or so weeks since Aunn and Zara’s marriage, all these scenes shot within the confines of that one room are beginning to look the same. The scene where Aunn fretted over his decision to apologize seemed never-ending, particularly since the punch line, Zara’s allergies, had already been revealed in the promos for this episode. Also, there was a similar scene earlier in the episode as well – where Zara had snuck in to Aunn’s bed after escaping from daadi’s bedroom – granted that the context of the two scenes was different, nonetheless there was this sense ke abhi tau dekha tha … Apart from Aunn Zara’s dhaka start story, we also saw Manzar trying his very best to patao Shehna, who I must say has a very level head on her shoulders. I am really liking Mahra Bhatty here, and Mukarram Kaleem never fails to bring a smile to my face. I love all his scenes with Osman Khalid Butt as well. Infact, the Aunn- Manzar pair is so much more fun and actually share more chemistry than the Aunn-Zara pair; today their hot and heavy breathing and the OTT angst was a bit too reminiscent of Bollywood at its cheesiest. Though Maya Ali is getting better, very likable as the chulbuli Zara, she is not quite there yet. Her emotional exchange with the superb Adnan Jaffer, when fauji sahab proposes a separate living arrangement for Aunn and Zara, failed to make an impression. What did make an impression, and a very strong one, was how creatively the scene between Husna and daadi ji, Parveen Bano (!), was shot. Rather than relying heavily on closeups, as Haissam seem to like to do, here we saw a very agitated daadi’s reflection in the mirror as Husna calmed her down, reassuring her that Zara was not lost. I love the finesse with which Husna handles the easily excitable daadi. Unlike her boisterous in-laws, this quiet woman does not cause too many ripples but still almost always manages to get her way. Faiza’s done a fabulous job writing these two very contrasting characters. Along with Mukarram and Osman, Hina Bayat and Nasreen Qureshi would be my other nominees for the jori of the year award. Overall, though still fun, I found this episode to be more lethargic and less engaging as compared to the previous ones. Here’s to hoping the pace picks up appreciably and we can go beyond Aunn’s continued attempts to win Zara’s heart – yaar Zara ab bas bhi karo aur Aunn ki apology maan lo… we all need to move on!
